Ready to Fly

Today, I made it official. I will be attending Otterbein University this fall to pursue a B.F.A. in Theatre Design & Technology.

Why Otterbein?

In my high school theatre experience, I have had to learn many things out of necessity and in the trenches of the moment. At the college level, I want to refine and add to my self-taught skills. I also want to do more.

And, while my portfolio is focused on costumes, I also have an interest in exploring my talents in other areas. I am truly passionate about learning how each department supports and complements each other to produce great theatre.

Last year, I had the chance to attend Otterbein's workshops at the International Thespian Festival. These sessions, along with a visit to campus during my Junior year, not only confirmed that I wanted a program that would allow me to explore many disciplines, but also that I wanted to learn from the people at Cowan Hall.

In the search for a school that fit, Otterbein checked all the boxes!

my ideal program

  1. opportunity for growth in costume construction & design through challenging course work and best-practice instruction

  2. flexibility to explore untapped technical talents in lighting, scenic design, props and sound design

  3. first-year hands-on production opportunities

  4. variety in production season (musicals, plays, operas, dance) spanning modern and classical genres (golden age, shakespeare, new works)

  5. diversity in production spaces (large prosceniums, black boxes, non-traditional spaces, touring scenarios)

  6. dedicated costume faculty and staff (instruction & costume shop management)

  7. healthy mix of costume work (stock pulls, rentals, new creations)

  8. graduation with employable skills and portfolio pieces across multiple technical concentrations

  9. professional internship and study abroad opportunities

  10. environment that fosters community, communication and mutual respect between actors and technicians

The strengths of the program for me included the expertise and enthusiasm of the faculty and the incredible facilities and an impressive professional network.

And, while I realize my theater journey may ultimately lead me to a big city or a national tour, my inner grandma loves everything about Westerville's quietly creative vibe!

Otterbein already feels like home!
