Not a Simple Sponge
In bringing The SpongeBob Musical to the stage, our entire design team wanted to create something truly original. Rather than simply copying the Broadway looks, we committed to following the script.
“The audience enters the underwater world of Bikini Bottom. It’s colorful, whimsical, and Tiki-inspired, with objects that have fallen to the bottom of the ocean floor.”
As both our scenic designers and props crew were able to incorporate recyclables into their Bikini Bottom builds, I decided to take the idea one step further.
“What if fashion magazines and patterns from different decades had fallen down to the bottom of the ocean?”
The resulting wardrobe proved to be an oddly well-coordinated hodgepodge of styles that not only mirrored fish but also leaned heavily into the essence and origin of the characters.
