Fry Cook of the Month
“I wore my good shoes and I've got my tie on.”
While our production would feature a female in the lead role, I still wanted to keep the character masculine in silhouette. My work began with design inspiration centered around a 1950s golfer. Our SpongeBob would be the epitome of “neat” to represent an imagined “clean cut” IDEAL employee of the Krusty Krab.
Construction Highlights
Pulled and Altered Dress Shirt & Trousers - Opting for patterned fabrics (gingham & stripes for depth) to avoid a flat look on stage. Vintage golfer vibe achieved with high waisted dress pants that were shortened, and then detailed with a thick cuff. Gingham dress shirt also altered and then painted with large yellow dots to add an element of “sponge.” The look was completed with tube socks and black boots and a red tie (as worn by the character’s cartoon namesake).
Other Notes
Throughout the design process I worked closely with the hair and make-up team to create our fantasy characters. While I originally drew SpongeBob’s hair in bubble braids, I was pleased to see this look ultimately adopted for the production.
