Inspiration for “She Kills Monsters”
Sources of Inspiration for Design and Color Palette
By design, there was a desire to foreshadow the 5-headed dragon that appears at the end of the show.
“[Tiamat] is a five-headed dragon that has laid waste to generations of adventurers and civilizations since the dawn. Each of her heads embodies the five different elemental powers of the chromatic dragons – earth, fire, water, wind, and lightning. Many adventures have fought her. All have died.”
The colors selected for the Dragon heads were incorporated into the initial designs GREEN for earth, RED for fire, BLUE for water, BLACK for wind, and GRAY for lightning.
I met with the designer to talk about the elements we needed to highlight for the character. You can see the color blocking in the designer’s drawing to foreshadow the dragon that appears at the end of the show.
As “Tillius the Paladin” would also represent her fantasy surroundings a neutral base of browns was also incorporated. This would allow the Tiamat colors to “pop” on stage.
Real-World characters were all based on 90s sitcom/movie characters so there was also a need to try and include a nod to the fashion of the times.
A paisley print fabric was selected to compliment the solid neutrals.
Beyond the drawing provided by the student designer, research into renaissance faire costumes and D&D character illustrations was made.
Here I opted for rustic metal eyelet/grommets and lacing details.
